He sees a shadow. Adam is observant and quick to react, and is immediately rushing up the stairs when the figure reappears behind him. He whirls around before the stranger can even speak a single syllable, takes in the skeleton, the strange hovering skulls, the apparent charging attack.
Even as he's doing that, he's raising his gun. Apparently, he's taken the skeleton off guard somehow, and he won't waste that chance.
