Daud thought that Corvo sparing him would have been the last of it; after all, what was there for him now? He had Billie's gift of Serkonan ports of call tucked inside of his coat, the slow ache of his healing side, a handful of bone charms in his belt, and...
nothing else, not even his blade. He'd left that at the grave of Jessamine Kaldwin, a useless and soppy gesture he shouldn't have. That the mark pulsed gently on his hand the entire time did nothing to make him feel better. Now, all he wanted was to rest. He should know better than to expect that he'd get anything that he wanted. It appears the Outsider isn't done with him yet.
He bedded down in the cargo of a smuggling ship and woke on the floor of a castle. Half of him wishes that it were Dunwall Tower's and that Corvo's dragged him back, somehow, which is as hopeless and improbable as it is foolish and wishful.
He explored the castle, found it both ironic and unpleasant that it's floating in a void-- curse him, that black-eyed bastard-- and eventually chose one of the offices for himself, seeing that nobody else took it. He tested his powers and found that all of them except for his ability to summon one of his Whalers to him worked. He spent a few minutes in the decrepit throne room and guiltily eyes the abandoned thrones. If the Outsider wanted to tailor-make a prison for him, this certainly fit the bill.
And then he went off in search of the other inhabitants. A castle this large and well-kept (with the exception of some rooms) has to have some.

Date: 2017-04-18 06:33 am (UTC)A child, to be exact, sitting on a windowsill, as tends to happen when Frisk meets new people. Really, they just like the sun on their face when they rest--and that's what they're doing, since they've been having even more trouble sleeping at night than they usually do.
Unless he's loud when he walks, they probably won't notice him until he says something.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 07:43 am (UTC)He approaches the sill until he's about a yard away from both window and child, hands clasped behind his back. Once, in better days, it might have made him look commanding; not it just makes him look tired.
"Do you live here?"
He's out of practice addressing people without the power to snatch themselves out of harm's way if he startles them into dropping off of a perch. Sorry, Frisk.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 07:57 am (UTC)Oh. A new person.
...A new person who looks like he got into a bunch of fights at some point.
"Um. Yeah. You're new." That's not a question by now.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 08:11 am (UTC)"So it seems. Do you live here?" He's never been terrific with children despite what Billie and Thomas insisted. "I didn't expect to find anyone up here at this time of day, least of all strange boys on windowsills."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 08:27 am (UTC)Completely. No movement, no blinking, no breath, because it's been knocked out of them and they can apparently just do that now, stop breathing like it's something normal. They're not sure which is stranger, their new ability, or being called that.
"Not a boy," they say, once they manage to start it up again. "Or a girl. Just a kid. Called 'they'. There's a bunch of people like that here. Jus'...so you don't...forget."
They slip forward until their toes are touching the floor. The window they were leaning against is warm, and they might be tempted to relax again, and that might be a bad idea. "And, um, yeah. I live here. A lot of people do, and monsters, but they're nice, don't fight them." Immediate warning along with a sharp glare--a baring of teeth too, looking like more of a threat than they mean it to be. "The Castle took us."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 05:18 pm (UTC)Old age is making him nostalgic. He grunts when the kid finally says something, gathers their wits about them enough to.
"Fine. I'll keep it in mind." It's an apology but not a concession, and he doesn't sound sorry at all. "What do you mean the Castle took you? I assumed that it was the work of the Outsider." This place having its own sort of sentience-- not like the Brigmore Manor, that was again the work of witches, which made it indirectly the work of the Outsider-- definitely made things more confusing.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 05:31 pm (UTC)They tap a short rhythm on the stone wall. 'Outsider'? That's a sad-sounding name.
"The Castle took us," they repeat without inflection, "an' everybody else who lives here now. Lots of us are from different worlds an' timelines. Nobody knows how to get back."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 05:48 pm (UTC)"Different timelines? What do you mean by that?" If it's anything like what he thinks the kid is saying, that means he might meet himself here. Corvo. Jessamine.
That would be terribly awkward.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 05:58 pm (UTC)"Different timelines...where stuff is sort of like what happened in yours, but things went different. Someone did something else, or somebody was born a different time, stuff like that. There's some of the same people here. A few mes."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 06:07 pm (UTC)"Huh." As far as he knows, the Outsider doesn't have the power to do that.
"Thanks," he says abortively. It's always a good idea to keep an eye on children-- they see and hear a lot more than anybody would ever expect. "My name is Daud. What's yours?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 06:22 pm (UTC)"Daud. I'm Frisk. An'--and the other mes, um, don't have this." They point to their jaggedly inhuman teeth. "An' be careful if you find a room with a big glowing diamond thing in it, you should just leave that alone. If you want real ones, diamonds and other stuff, there's jewelry in the cakes in the ballroom. Don't choke."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 06:39 pm (UTC)"Clearly, there's places in this castle I haven't seen yet."
If he were a younger man he'd leave Frisk with something dry and witty. As he is, he merely waves his hand and meanders off. "I'll be seeing you."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 06:46 pm (UTC)They don't dither for long before they hop down, start following with a quiet tapping of feet worn boots. "Yeah, there's lots, and it moves. Don't...you have other questions?" Most new people do.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 07:51 pm (UTC)He sighs and admits defeat. "Do you like it here?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 09:55 pm (UTC)"Then you might just walk off the Edge or fall inna trap door." Not that there's many of the latter. "'S okay. Some people think it's prison, some people think it's a good new home, or both sometimes."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 10:13 pm (UTC)"I'll watch where I step, Frisk." The name is foreign and awkward on his tongue like a cigarette that doesn't belong to him. "What did you mean when you said that monsters live here?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 10:35 pm (UTC)Huh. They were half-expecting him to think they were a monster, they think as they hurry to match his pace. "I mean...there's monsters. Some look like skeletons, or weird slime sometimes, or bat-people, or human-y goats. They're people, though, not...dangerous animals."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-18 11:20 pm (UTC)well. It did nobody good to dwell upon the past. He slows down further but doesn't make any more accommodations for Frisk.
"I'll decide that for myself."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-19 12:03 am (UTC)After a possibly uncomfortable amount of time, Frisk speaks again. "Did your world have monsters?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-19 12:45 am (UTC)"Yours sound more..." a pause, a rasping breath. "Beastly."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-19 03:40 pm (UTC)"They're still people. Nice people, too. Mosta the skeletons ones you meet are my family."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-19 10:15 pm (UTC)"So you've got walking skeletons here, too."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-19 10:24 pm (UTC)"Yes! There's Sans, he's inna blue hoodie, he's kinda lazy and does stupid stuff, sometimes but he's really cool actually, an' the oldest. There's Papyrus--there's two of him actually, but one of them's a lot more nervous, and he's my--he's family too, really young, a baby almost, but he's taller'n me. Serif's a baby too, an' taller than me too, but just a little! He looks sorta like Sans, but he doesn't have the same clothes."
That...was a gigantic ramble, coming from Frisk. Even they look surprised about it after the fact.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-20 05:47 pm (UTC)Daud isn't one to question about what other people consider family. He, after all, ran-- used to run-- what could charitably be called a halfway house for assassins and murderers.
Still he's glad, in a grumpy way, that he's gotten so much out of Frisk. "It sounds like you care about them a lot."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-21 12:05 am (UTC)Moment of loving babble done, they give him a pointed look, sideways. "People hear 'monsters' and think 'bad'. But that's just...their name."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-24 03:38 am (UTC)He takes it a step further and attempts to predictively assuage any fears they may have, "I don't mean them any harm. I'm not a killer anymore."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-04-25 04:23 am (UTC)'Anymore'. "Prob'ly shouldn't...nevermind." They were going to tell him to keep that secret, but secrets don't keep well here, do they? Not always. He openly admitted it anyway, unlike others. "They're...not as tough as humans, sometimes. Serif and Sans even worse than most monsters. I tell everybody to be careful. It's...important."
forgive my slow ass
Date: 2017-05-01 06:21 am (UTC)He has the feeling Frisk might answer differently.
=w=b np my guy
Date: 2017-05-01 06:42 am (UTC)"Yeah. If they...ever need it." Even if they might need to throw themselves in between them and a threat, or FIGHT. "Why."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-05-07 11:12 pm (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2017-05-08 12:08 am (UTC)"...'M friends with a lot of people," they say eventually.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-05-17 03:35 pm (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2017-05-18 11:12 am (UTC)Though...they do consider Charas friends, and they're unsure whether they think of Frisk being their friend back. But they're special cases.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-03 03:37 am (UTC)He clasps his hands behind his back and looks out a window, down to the gardens, before continuing on.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-03 05:01 pm (UTC)They'd be a touch more pushy if he was violently opposing them in the style of Undyne--that is, trying to convince him they're neither pathetic nor dangerous enough to kill.
...Or if he was a monster or another kid, that too, they think almost guiltily, following his gaze. They can see a patch of sunflowers from here.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-12 04:14 am (UTC)He's doing none of that now, of course. He looks tired and worn, but a certain kind of drily amused over Frisk's admission.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-12 10:06 am (UTC)"...I won't make you if you really don't wanna be. But there's...no reason to not be. Friends."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-16 07:05 am (UTC)"...now, I am going to explore this castle. And hopefully find some explanation."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-16 07:31 am (UTC)"Okay. Tell us if you find anything," they say, resisting the urge to immediately protest and take the lead and guide him like they offered before. Maybe he needs a touch of space to think about it.
After all, they've got nothing but time.
