Yuri Petrov's Unpleasant Awakening
Dec. 20th, 2016 08:38 pmWhen Yuri wakes up the first thing he's aware of is a sense of acute disorientation, an uncertainty of where he is and what he's doing and how long he's been there.
The second thing he's aware of is that it's cold and he's uncomfortable. He's lying on something hard and narrow, his arm is dangling off the side of whatever he's lying on, and his hand is resting against a hard, stone surface. The air smells musty, with a very faint trace of some indistinct perfume.
Yuri opens his eyes. There's a vaulted stone ceiling above him, a wooden pew beneath him. A chapel of some sort, though- Yuri gives the room a once over as he sits up- one that's been left alone for a long time.
There's a thin patina of dust on everything including, to his disgust, the pew on which he was resting. A few empty shelves line the room and there's an altar at the back of the chapel which he surmises an altar more from its position than anything else, as it's simply a wooden table with nothing on it. A confessional booth is tucked in by the chapel entrance, and there's a stained glass window over the altar, depicting a knight on horseback spearing a dragon.
Apart from that, there doesn't seem to be much of interest. Nothing in the way of immediately obvious clues as to who kidnapped him and why, and his last coherent memory was of going over paperwork from the Albert Maverick incident in his office.
Yuri slowly gets to his feet, noting that the dust around the pew hasn't been disturbed. The disorientation isn't as strong now that he's taken stock of his surroundings, but he's still more lost than he's used to. But nothing seems to be restricting him from leaving, so he heads for the chapel door.

Date: 2016-12-21 02:18 am (UTC)A pretty door they're pretty sure they've never seen before, either. Big like the ones to the ballroom, but they don't have the same kind of markings.
On the other side, Frisk ambles up to the door and knocks once, just to hear how it sounds. There might be somebody in there, there might not, but it's probably not someone's bedroom, so they don't waste time listening for an answer before they shove it open.
(no subject)
Date: 2016-12-22 01:31 am (UTC)Instead he sees a child, and his surprise is momentarily visible before smoothing out to his usual calm. They look a bit young to be involved with a kidnapping- if that even is why he's here- but one never knows.
"Hello," he says. "What are you doing here?"
(no subject)
Date: 2016-12-22 02:15 am (UTC)...'Here' being...a church? Frisk tilts their head, peering up past the stranger. They don't particularly like the dragon-killing they spot in the glass.
"Looking," they answer. "'S a new place, I think."
(no subject)
Date: 2016-12-22 02:26 am (UTC)"The dust would indicate otherwise," Yuri points out. "Do you have any idea where this is?"
(no subject)
Date: 2016-12-22 03:18 am (UTC)And 'dust' gets them to take a few steps in, carefully looking closer. Okay, just normal dust, not murder dust.
They don't know how exactly to answer that. Should they tell him 'not far from the Edge', 'in the castle', 'near a tower with art in it'? First: "Um...how new are you?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-08 11:13 pm (UTC)There are a lot of ways to interpret the child's question. After a moment's pause, Yuri finally says: "Perhaps I should explain myself. My name is Yuri Petrov, and the last thing I remember was working in my office, before I woke up in this building."
He gives the child a polite smile. "I realize this may sound strange, but I was hoping you might have some idea of why I'm here."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-08 11:28 pm (UTC)Frisk answers promptly. "Dunno why, but that's how we all get here. Everybody was just doing stuff at home and then we wake up here, in the castle. It's a really weird place," they say seriously, as a warning. "--And my name's Frisk."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-02-19 09:28 am (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2017-02-19 09:44 am (UTC)Answering 'who else is here' is...complicated. Too complicated to explain without talking about the rest of the weirdness first.
Frisk leans against a pew, brushing it off first. "The castle's a thing called a 'hub'. There's people from different timelines and worlds. And the castle's in the sky, and we don't know how to get off it, 'cause even people who can fly can't go far. There's some people who're the same, names and looks, but they're from different timelines. Told you it was weird."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-14 07:34 pm (UTC)"What do you mean by 'monsters?" he says at last. That seems like a good place to start. "You don't seem to think they're dangerous."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-14 10:22 pm (UTC)"'Cause they're not! They're just magic, not humans. The ones here--some look like big goats in the shape of people with paws and sharp teeth, those're Boss Monsters, or skeletons that talk kinda weird. A bunch of them are my family," they inform him, and there's only a little warning in their voice.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 12:37 am (UTC)"Is that so?" he says. There's a touch of amusement he can't quite keep out of his voice there as Frisk's explanation grows more elaborate. Strange as the situation is, he can't quite bring himself to believe in magical monsters unseen, but Frisk's obvious cheerfulness is infectious enough to stop him from being irritable about it.
Besides, the more this kid talks the more likely they are to drop some clues. "Perhaps you could introduce me to some of them."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 12:51 am (UTC)They glance over their shoulder, out the door. That's not a lie--Sans might be in his room, but he might be sleeping somewhere else, and of course Serif and S-Papyrus don't stay in there all the time either.
"...We can go look, see if we can find anybody. And look at other stuff that's around. The castle's really big."
They spin on their heel and practically skip out of the chapel. They don't like it in there anyway.
hope this works |V
Date: 2017-09-15 01:14 am (UTC)Despite this, he accepts their offer to look around. "That sounds like an excellent start." At the very least, Frisk probably knows the lay of the land better than Yuri does.
(He'll follow along with Frisk as they show him around, albeit with some difficulty; he's significantly taller than them and not at all used to having to compensate for a child's pace, so he'll frequently overshoot them without thinking about it and then have to pause so Frisk can catch up.)
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 01:39 am (UTC)Frisk will find him in the area outside the main doors, sitting at the base of the fountain. He's busy playing with some wooden toys Tauriel carved for him a while back, and if the way he's muttering to himself is any indication, there's quite an intense little scene playing out inside his skull as he moves them about.
But there's some things Serif can never fail to miss. The feeling of Frisk's soul is one of them. When he feels them step outside, he looks up - entirely without surprise - and waves at them. Only then does Yuri get his attention. He tilts his head to regard the stranger with a little bit of wariness, but mostly only mild curiosity.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 01:56 am (UTC)Frisk noticed Yuri's height and speediness--they mostly tried to keep up to be polite but generally kept a step or two back.
It might come as a surprise, then, once they're at the front doors and spy Serif playing exactly how fast they shoot forward to meet him. "Serif! Sans-Serif," they add once they skid to a halt beside him, turning back to Yuri and beaming. "An' this is Yuri Petroff! He's new."
yuri is v dramatic
Date: 2017-09-15 02:22 am (UTC)But then they reach a great set of doors leading to a fountain outside and if that wasn't enough to drag him back to reality, the way Frisk suddenly shoots forward to the skeleton seated at the foot of the statue would be. Unfortunately, the shock that breaks out on Yuri's face, and he can't help but feel a chill down his spine at the way the specter of death moves its head to look at the two of them with eerie sockets.
So. Frisk wasn't telling stories after all.
There's too much enormity in that for Yuri to contemplate all at once, so he sticks to habitual politeness. "Hello," he says, taking a cautious step forward. "Sans-Serif, is it?" Why are you named after a letterform. "Are you a member of Frisk's family?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 02:45 am (UTC)But no, Frisk is a child on a mission. Of course they are. And this is a mission he likes to think he's getting good at. So Serif gets up, dusts himself off, and nods to Yuri in greeting.
"yeah. and yeah. and hi." He ticks his answers off on two fingerbones. "you can call me sans-serif." He's learning a lot about people here at the castle, and so he can guess that Yuri's not really up for hearing an answer more complicated than that. "and i'm one of frisk's brothers. welcome to the castle, yuri petroff. it's pretty nice, huh?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 02:56 am (UTC)Then there's a moment where Frisk's face goes a little funny--when Serif introduces himself as brother, for real, saying a thought they didn't feel allowed to have.
Maybe they'll need to talk about that later. For now, they have to work swallowing down a lump in their throat, which is even harder to do with the pride in how comfortable Serif is right now.
"He--he might not know yet. I jus' found him," they manage, staring at the rabbit in their hands really hard.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-15 03:17 am (UTC)"It's Petrov," he corrects automatically, and quickly adds "But just Yuri is fine." They're just children after all, with or without skin, and this isn't exactly a courtroom. (No, this is apparently the courtyard of a castle. Which serves as a time/space hub. And flies.)
He glances over at Frisk when they haltingly speak up, noticing the way they stare at the toy in their hands with an intensity Yuri doesn't fully understand. Discomfited, his expression goes blank before turning back Sans-Serif's way. "Frisk found me only recently in the chapel where I woke up," he confirms. "I'm afraid I'm still trying to find my bearings."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-17 03:02 pm (UTC)He wants to ask, but instead makes himself turn his attention back to Yuri. Because Yuri is a new person, and it's their job to help new people, right? Frisk taught him that.
"petrov," he repeats dutifully. Names are important. "didn't know we had a 'chapel'." Then again, he doesn't know what one of those is. "you'll probably be trying to find 'em for a while, though. the castle doesn't stay one way for long. it likes to move rooms around." If Frisk is looking too bothered to continue the explanations, he'll take over. "sometimes in a helpful way. sometimes not."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-09-17 03:38 pm (UTC)"Petrov," Frisk mimics. They're still staring at the rabbit. "Sorry." They punctuate the apology by leaning to bump their arm against Serif's in what attempts to be silent thanks, giving them a moment of time to fix their breathing.
"It--it's easy to get, um, lost a lot. The gardens're always in the middle an' the Edge is always outside, though. 'S not hard to find your room when you pick one either."
(no subject)
Date: 2016-12-21 05:31 am (UTC)They already know they won't go up in flames, but there's still that - vicious glee in doing the forbidden. Their passenger, for their part, likes this more in the context of it being abandoned.
Only not, as becomes apparent as they walk forward, footsteps soft by habit but still picked up and thrown around by the place's acoustics. Dust everywhere (easily ignorable; not the right colour, not the right texture) and someone with no footprints heading towards the only door.
Spooky.
Unless considering the idea that people just appear here. Their body language shifts, becomes more formal as they watch him, keeping their distance, and they bring their hands up to sign at the stranger.
[Hello. You seem new.]
Caution is advised, they feel. At the moment, this human (?) adult is an unknown.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-07 07:09 pm (UTC)"Hello," he ventures and then- the child does a series of gestures and Yuri blinks.
Oh. Sign language. He's not familiar with that sort of thing, which means this is going to be inconvenient. Especially since he missed whatever they were trying to say.
Yuri hesitates before saying "I'm sorry," along with the accompanying signs. "Could you repeat that?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-07 08:59 pm (UTC)Then they point to the single set of footsteps in the dust, raising their eyebrows, slightly.
Perhaps they should start carrying a slate, they think. Something to keep in mind for later.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-26 12:33 pm (UTC)When the child gestures to the dust, Yuri simply comments, "It seems as though nobody else has been here in a long time."
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-26 08:43 pm (UTC)[You've died and gone to Hell. Our boss has a sense of humor.] Hence the chapel, which they gesture at again. [Unfortunately, I seem to have left my trident in my other coat.]
That causes an image to flash across their consciousness - something red, with a flower at the tines. They shake their head to clear it.
*Sorry.
*That was me.
As a heads-up, Grune was good friends (AKA friendly acquaintances) with Luceti's Yuri
Date: 2016-12-21 05:38 am (UTC)But the moment she sees someone inside the chapel with pale blond hair--someone very familiar--she comes back to herself at once.
"Yuri!" she calls out as she hurries forward, hands clasped in front of her. "Oh, it's so good to see you again!"
Ouch, poor Grune. None of her T&B pals remembering her.
Date: 2017-01-07 09:25 pm (UTC)The woman suddenly hurries forward, looking absolutely delighted in a way that takes Yuri utterly aback. He takes an involuntary step away, blinking rapidly as he tries to decipher her reaction. Obviously if she's involved in a kidnapping she would be likely to know who he is, but the phrasing, "It's so good to see you again," suggests there's more going on.
"...Who are you?" Yuri asks. "How do you know who I am?"
His voice is steady, despite his startled look. Internally however, his alarm is only increasing. Has something happened to his memories? He'd thought after Lunatic disposed of Maverick that such a thing wouldn't be a concern.
Tbh she's used to it. Luceti had a loooot of people who didn't remember her.
Date: 2017-01-07 10:00 pm (UTC)"I'm Grune. We were friends in Luceti, but it's okay if you don't remember me."
poor grune :(
Date: 2017-02-19 07:28 am (UTC)"I'm afraid I haven't heard of Luceti," he says, guessing that it's a town of some kind, "Are you sure you haven't confused me with anyone else?" And if so, why was she so quick to assure him it was alright if he forgot her?
got a permissions post if u don't want hush fucking around his head at all :V
Date: 2016-12-21 12:11 pm (UTC)Frisk knows this. Hush knows this, too. Specifically, Frisk knows this because of Hush.
They all want to leave, and so they've decided to experiment with Teleport. Currently, Hush's trying to make a map of the castle, even as it shifts. It has a layout, it has some points that never move--perhaps he can map how it works, but that'll take time. Good thing that's all they seem to have.
Yesterday, Hush plotted a point between the tower of birds, a kitchen, and the library. The tower is there, the library is there, but the kitchen's moved...in place is this. It warrants investigation.
Behind him, Yuri will hear a thump of two feet hitting the floor. Frisk's. Hush lands gracefully on one of the pews soundlessly (he was named that for a reason). He quickly senses the human present; Frisk's too busy staring down at him to notice, and Hush is too occupied with psychically reaching around the area to outwardly acknowledge him.
yuri's thoughts: "the fuck is this. the fuck is that. the fuck is you"
Date: 2017-01-08 08:20 pm (UTC)Then he notices the small... plant... doll... ballerina... thing... standing on a nearby pew.
What.
Hush will be sensing a lot of suspicion, confusion, and concern, chiefly centered around what exactly Frisk's relation is to Yuri's current predicament.
"Hello?" he says. He has a lot of questions, but after a moment settles on "Who are you?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-09 02:43 am (UTC)"Hello," they parrot. Not someone they've met yet. Then again, they haven't met many people in the first place.
"Frisk," they add, and point to their Kirlia. "And this is Hush. Sorry for bothering you. We'll be gone soon." They're trespassing on this stranger's space, it seems.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-02-26 10:17 pm (UTC)His tone's a little more authoritative than he'd normally consider appropriate for speaking with a strange child, even one that's a teleporting NEXT, so Yuri amends it with "My apologies. You aren't bothering me."
He glances from Frisk, then to the Hush. It hasn't moved. Is it really just some sort of strange doll? It looks too organic for that.
He forces his attention back to Frisk. "Do you know anything about this church?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-02-28 04:09 am (UTC)Hush stays in his place. Pretending to be a doll is easy, as he doesn't blink much as it is.
"No. I don't." They don't even know what a church really is, and it's only after he says that their eyes wander. The glass gets a longer look than Yuri did in the first place.
(no subject)
Date: 2016-12-27 07:30 pm (UTC)Barnaby certainly isn't looking for Yuri - he didn't even know the man was here - but he has been curious about the possibility of others from his world arriving here. Perhaps that's why the door to the library suddenly opens up in the same hallway as the chapel, despite Barnaby not recalling seeing that door on his way to the room. Barnaby is left doing a double-take, first at the area he's found himself in, and then at the other occupant of the hallway.
"Mr. Petrov?" He stammers slightly with shock, before he struggles to compose himself. "When did you arrive here?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-09 12:46 pm (UTC)"I woke up in the chapel only a few moments ago." He adds, "I do hope you can tell me what's going on, Mr. Brooks." After all, if Barnaby's been kidnapped, as well as the executive judge of the Justice Bureau, then it's most likely a hero related matter- even if Yuri was under the impression Barnaby intended to retire.
(no subject)
Date: 2017-01-12 12:29 am (UTC)“I see. Excuse my surprise, I just didn’t realize there was a chapel here.” But the castle adds in new rooms every week, so he’s getting used to that, and instead just makes a note of it on his mental map.
“As for what’s going on, there isn’t much to say. You aren’t in Sternbild anymore, obviously, but this castle actually isn’t part of our world at all. Actually, we’ve been taken here from several different ‘universes’ for… some reason that we’re all still trying to figure out.”
(no subject)
Date: 2017-06-15 05:49 am (UTC)But his composure does slip a bit as what Barnaby says sinks in.
"I... see."
Yuri frowns, slightly. "You'll forgive my doubts, Mr. Brooks, but that is an extraordinary claim. What is your evidence to support this?"
(no subject)
Date: 2017-07-14 01:34 am (UTC)He offers an apologetic smile.
"Of course, it's all a bit confusing to explain."
