The gardens are growing again.

Frisk decides to leave their secret base for more than just food, for once. They'd had some Berries planted since before...the de-aging incident.

Predictably, there's not much left on their plots. A few of the Aspear plants have sprouts peeking out of the newly exposed dirt, but nothing else managed to resist the sudden icy weather. Hoenn doesn't have that kind of thing.

Sparks and Needles loiter around them when they set to their task--first, dig up the ruined berries that haven't entirely disintegrated, toss them into a box they brought out, that can be used for making mulch later. Then, just plant what they have left, which is a lot. (More than they should be able to fit into that bag, in fact.)

They're in a relatively secluded area, but it's still out in the gardens, and the claimed space they've got to fix up is huge. They won't exactly welcome visitors, but they've have their time to be angry and upset with their team...they probably won't chase anyone away.

[There is a kid, a Frisk, wandering the castle today, on a peculiar mission.

You see, they are putting up posters with a doodle of a smiling flower. They read as follows:

LOST PLANT

- Goes by Flowey
- Kinda cranky
- Yes, he talks
- Yes, he has a face
- Reward is negotiable but may include a date.

They wander the corridors, trying to find spots that will be noticeable. Granted, they still haven't gotten a feel for this... frankly unpredictable castle.

After a while, they pause to grab some cake to nibble on, though they do so with a sigh.]

Man, free dessert sounds great on paper, but I think I'm gonna be sick if I keep this up.

[Oh well. At least it's energizing? And there has to be at least a chance that they'll find more familiar faces this way.]

Two nights after everyone's back to normal, it rains, and Frisk doesn't like it.
After all, the castle doesn't really have weather--it was cloudy through half the castle, cloudy and windy around the Edge, and sunny in the gardens. The rainstorm that announced Ryoji, the thunderstorm that announced that weird dog thing and other them, drifts of snow and a few breezes and falling flakes that Jack Frost brought, those were...because of them. The deeper fog of October, last month's snowstorm, those came with changes that nobody asked for (even if a few of them might've not minded so much, in the end).

And that's what they're expecting, when they shake off their weird numbness and go hunting around the castle and watching people from afar.

--But nothing's really different. Nothing they can see on the outside. Not everybody's acting normal, but last month was long and brought up lots of...feelings, so that's not big enough to be another change like those. It's just rain. Just real weather for the first time they can remember since they got here.

They wake up.

They wake up, and for a moment it's a confusion as two sets of impulses try to sit up, try to roll over, what is this why can't I move-

It all comes flooding back, and the thrashing, twitching body goes still, glassy eyed, panting.

Out by the edge, near sunset, someone is doing Something Very Stupid. It isn't the first time. One can only hope it will be the last.

It's not the worst thing he could be doing. He's 99% sure it won't kill him--it's only magic. He's successfully regained some skill with bone attacks and extra sets of hands, so why has this been so difficult? He misses them, even though they're really nothing more than echoes of his own personality, not creatures of their own right. He created them. He perfected them. He's proud of them.

To anyone watching, he doesn't look like he's doing anything. Standing stiff and still, hands clasped behind his back, watching the sun go down. Until something nearly as tall as he is explodes into being, floating in midair.

And then...

He starts to melt. He's overreached, he doesn't have the energy to keep his shape together. Legs sag and fuse, fingers drip like pudding, face loses all detail. Two minutes later, he's nothing more than a sad, mostly shapeless whiteblack lump of goo in the dirt. The Blaster skull nudges at him, like a huge curious nightmarish puppy.

Worth it.

Everything's back to normal.

The hallways are as run-down as ever, the decorations and the music all gone. Mettaton wanders through them, not clear on where he's headed, only knowing he can't bear to keep still. His mind catches up with him, if he tries.

He's himself again. Why doesn't he feel like it?

He made it back to his room last night, after coming to himself again where he'd been stargazing out in the gardens, and after the ensuing bout of hysterical cackling finally wore itself out. At least he's dressed now, ruffled shirt hiding the cracks in his core. More or less - it's buttoned up wrong, letting little glimpses of pink show through. His crown isn't on straight either (the new one, the diamond-studded circlet he found abandoned in a dusty bedroom, not the one he gave up for lost in the library months ago). He's aware of all this. He doesn't plan to fix it.

A door looks familiar. He opens it, and finds himself stepping into the ballroom. There it is, same as ever - grand and empty, tables piled high with confections. Mettaton pauses by one of them, looking up at the massive tiered cake in its centre. And then further up, to a dusty spiderweb hanging from a corner of the ceiling.

"Not so young and beautiful yourself, now, are you?" he hisses, to the room, to the whole awful castle, something hot and vicious boiling up inside him. He raises a leg, braces his foot against the edge of the table. "Nobody wants you any more, darling! Nobody wants to be here! Nobody cares!"

His voice rises to a shout as he kicks, hard, flipping the table over. Cakes and pastries smash against the floor, plates shattering. Mettaton strides into the wreckage, grinding his heel into anything he sees left intact. There's frosting all over his boots. It doesn't matter.

None of it matters now.

[This is... unexpected. Very, very unexpected. Sure, Papyrus has theorized about parallel dimensions! He even created an interdimensional transporter, which brought forth... a lamp. But still! Something from the other side! He's dreamed of being able to cross realities and meet other Papyruses. Others in general, really.

He just didn't expect it to happen so suddenly!

But here he is, in a strange castle unlike the one in New Home. Everything is new. Different. Distinct! And naturally, as a scientist, this Papyrus can't wait to investigate.

So he doesn't.

Instead, he proceeds to zip about as fast as his bony legs can carry him, clipboard in hand and a great big grin on his face.]

Nyeh heh heh! This is incredible! Such impressive architecture. Such fascinating features! And yet...

[As he nears the ballroom, he stops, eye sockets narrowing.]

Where are all the puzzles?!

[And for that matter, where is their human? He taps his foot. Tucks the clipboard under his arm.

It would seem he has his work cut out for him!]

[[ Sorry for the belatedness of this post! On the flipside if there was stuff set during the event you wanted to get to but wasn't able to post yet, feel free to backdate your posts. Event information/discussion can still be found here. ]]

Once again, it's midnight.

This time, the change isn't as sudden and dramatic. The winds die down, and the castle is quiet. Slowly, the air grows warmer.

Presently, the silence is broken by the sound of running water. The fountains and garden streams, frozen solid only yesterday, have thawed out, and the sound of the water echoes through the castle. It's joined by the quiet dripping of the icicles, and the occasional heavy fwump as melting snow slides and falls off the rooftops.

The change won't be quite complete in the morning: Although the air is springtime warm and smells fresh and clean, the ground is still thick with soaking wet snow and slush, and it will take a few days for it to all melt away.

However, the inside of the castle has gone entirely back to normal. Gone are the decorations, the special food, and the haunting carols in the distance. Castle Perrault is once again a strange, slightly derelict mausoleum.

And the residents of the castle who changed over the holidays will also wake up as their usual selves- except for the slight wrinkle that they can remember everything they said and did over the past month...

The music room is, without doubt, the second-most wonderful part of the castle.

The most wonderful part is outside, of course. Metta doesn't think he'll ever be tired of the sight of blue sky and sunshine, or clouds, or actual, real starlight. And there might be seasons here! He can't wait to see what the gardens look like without all that snow.

But he loves this room too. There are instruments in here that he's never even heard of before.

If only Blooky and Shyren could see it. They could finally all put on a show together. ...maybe they'll turn up here too, eventually. For now - well. There's no use in dwelling on it.

Anyone passing by the music room might hear the sound of a piano, and what may or may not be an oddly familiar voice singing an old song.

"...someday I'll wish upon a star, and wake up where the clouds are far behind me..."

He'd love to have an audience. Or better yet, another bandmember.

There's still snow on the ground outside. It's making one kid very happy!

A little armless reptilian child tromps through all this fun fun snow like they've never seen it before! (Which they have. Every day. For most of their life before moving to the surface. They're easily entertained.) Tromp tromp tromp hop, tromp tromp tromp hop. They're spelling something out, hopping from letter to letter to not screw it up...

Ever since last month, getting all that Determination poured into them by accident with Chara, Frisk's felt...different.

Better. Mood-wise, a little, and physically. More energy.

A stronger voice.

They default to being quiet still with other people; being louder is jarring even when they're alone. They don't mind it. It isn't fully healed, anyway, and it probably won't ever be, but it lasts longer before it hurts, and even more before it gave out.

But they didn't realize how much better it was until they'd been taking care of a much smaller Chara, sharing a room, deciding to help them when they didn't seem to be able to get to sleep...and sang to them. A n old lullaby they remembered from when they were their age, despite not knowing the language and having to hum and croon most of it. It worked, and they'd sat there for a while as it really hit them.

There was a reason they treasured the memory of their concert with Shyren, why they remembered her song even now, and MTT's theme, and the music box--they love music, they loved singing. But they couldn't do it for so long--they'd been sad about it sometimes, but they had other things to do, and the room full of instruments to play with eventually.

And now they can again.

Long after settling their little Chara to bed, Frisk steals out of their room and follows the music that's already there in the distance, the carols. There's a flash of hope that they can maybe find them, or at least make out the lyrics--but no, still not quite.

But that's okay.

They find their way onto a balcony overlooking the gardens. It's a nice enough stage, they think, but they probably won't disturb anyone out here. Who'd be resting in the gardens in this temperature? Even in the near-dark, they can see their breath fog out the stars.

What should they sing...?

Well. Why not a song about singing? One they remember distantly from some children's show they heard long ago--whatever it was, they can't remember, but they remember the lyrics. Or most of them.

So...they do.

A little off-key, a little shakier than it should be, but it's definitely not nothing.

"S-sing...sing a song...
Sing out loud,
Sing out strong..."

The Castle has variation in everything.

Most of the halls have floors of stone, but not all. Some have an unspecified sort of tile, shining and smooth.

There’s one set of four, arranged in a perfect square. They just finished breakfast when the castle decides to let them out into those hallways instead of the ones they’d come from when they’d stepped into the kitchen a little while before.

“The floor’s really shiny,” Chara comments. “I bet someone put a lot of work into washing it.” Frisk is a bit quiet, and doesn’t seem to mind Chara talking, so they’ve gotten into the habit of making little observations about the castle. They slip their hand out of Frisk’s and kneel down to brush their fingertips against the floor.

“Castle magic? It’s...nice...to clean up after everybody’s messes.”

“Oh! It’s cold too.” They slide their fingers up and down a tile. “And sort of slippy? It’s like ice.”

Frisk kneels beside them, testing it with a matching motion. ”Yeah, it is. Better than the stuff outside on the ground, though,” they add. They do like dressing up in different clothes, but they’re not quite as fond of having to dress up in so many layers at once and then have to wriggle out of it all to rest by the fireplaces. Besides, most of the ice outside’s covered in snow and slippy in a way that can be unpleasantly unexpected.

Chara turns their head to the side, giving Frisk a considering look. “I bet if I took my shoes off and ran really fast… I bet I could slide further than you.”

Frisk tilts their head back, pulling an overlong sleeve down over their palm and running their hand over it again. It moves smoothly.

They look back at Chara, grin slowly spreading over their face and an extra flood of warmth growing in their chest. ”You really think so?” They balance themselves on their hands and shoot their legs forward so they’re sitting rather than kneeling. ”We’re only gonna know ‘f we try it, right?” they go on, unlacing their shoes.

Chara chirps out an enthusiastic “Yeah!” and flops back onto the floor to join Frisk in wrestling off their shoes.

That’s precisely what anyone that happens to stumble across that square of halls will find--a pair of children racing sliding laps around the whole thing, giggling and calling encouragement and maybe some silly taunts to each other.

And Chara’s usually winning.

It was bittersweet, being young and whole again for a short time. Both good and bad, because everything must end. Back to being a unnatural thing in the shape of a skeleton, with far too much stuff in his head, weighing him down.

Luckily there's a convenient distraction about, something much more interesting than standing around and analyzing feelings. Those can be shoved sideways and buried, in favor of tinkering with the car that's taking up space outside. He hasn't gotten to the 'taking the engine apart' stage yet--for now, all he's done is sketch the parts on many sheets of (slightly oily) notebook paper lying neatly on the ground nearby. There's no breeze today, it should be fine.

He didn't even ask Souichi's permission first. How rude. But can you blame a nerd for being fascinated by the first motor vehicle engine he's had a chance to look at?

[Whatever is that oversaturated ego leaking from the cracks of the castle door? It almost creates a spotlight effect, the dust in the castle making it look like smoke is rolling through the room. Who is creating this powerful aura? Why, it's everyone's favorite(?) Underground super star! The door finally bursts open and a shapely leg clad in a pink high heeled boot steps through, followed by the rest of the fabulous robot, noodly arms wrapped around several pink suitcases.

Why would anyone want to vacation in a place like this? Who knows. No one knows how Mettaton's brain works. Sometimes even he himself doesn't know.

Of course, he's expecting this to be like a hotel and calls out for the staff that does not exist:]

It's been a week. Mom's not here, Leader Wattson's not here--nobody they know's here, except for Sparks, who came with them.

There's also not a lot of adults. Or people living here in this castle-palace at all.

Or a way down. They looked all the way around the castle, but there's no stairs or cable cars or anything. This must be a really far away mountain.

They're a little upset nobody told them they'd be here. (They might've cried a little, by themselves. Maybe.) But they are here, and they can't find their way home again, so this is just the start of their journey, that's all. There's so much to explore! And all this snow stuff to play with! So it's not that bad.

Shouldn't have got so mad at Sparks, they guess. It just wanted to play with everything, and nobody seems to own any of it for real--or nobody who cares enough to go find them and demand an apology, which is the same thing really.

So, naturally--to them, if nobody else--this means they're going to play with all of it, too.

And by play, they mean chuck stuff off the Edge and watch it all float through the clouds (like paper and cloth scraps) or plummet into the darker clouds below (like the cups and broken chairs and fallen branches from the garden). They've got a whole pile of stuff they gathered.

Sparks thinks they're being weird, but...

...there is something satisfying about watching things disappear like that. So he's there too, occasionally nosing a piece of something-or-other from the pile off the Edge, too.

Another day, another toddler. Now, there's a small skeleton monster wandering the castle. He's three years old to be exact, but who here could date the exact age of walking, talking bones? It's easy to tell it's Sans. He's shorter than usual, a lot more bug-eyed (socketed, whatever), but that blue jacket and perma-grin are still dare. He's pretty cute for a monster who grew up to be a walking, talking grease machine.

For anyone wandering the library in the middle of the afternoon, you might find a pile of books and blankets piled at a table. The blankets cover most of the table, save for a small "entrance" supported by books. The blanket is just thin enough to see the candlelight inside, as well as a skeleton-shaped shadow.

Should you choose get closer, two pairs of large blue eyes glow from under the entrance and dart out. Two floating skulls, both resembling dogs, speed out and lap several circles around your feet in a flurry of barks and sniffing. Mostly sniffing. They're not really dangerous, they're actually pretty excited by the new company.

Sans pokes his head out.

"Hey! You guys are supposed to be guard dogs!!"

By now, the skulls are yipping and bouncing in their floating spots. Sans groans about as exasperatively as a toddler can get. Which is a lot, if you've ever met a three-year-old. They're pretty sassy. He props himself on his stomach, and in the gap he makes between the entrance and the candlelight, you might be able to catch the pile of Christmas-themed sweets stashed under the table. Like, a lot. He stole a lot of cookies.

"Hi. I'm Sans. This is my... this is my big cool fort. I got treasure and guard dogs and a moat."

He points to a pile of books laid in a uneven circle around the table. That's the moat.

Chara wakes up curled in a little dark attic and they don't know where they are, which isn't an altogether new experience but instead of the the underside of a bridge or the stink of a dark allyway they find themselves in a strange dark castle like something out of a cartoon. Or a movie. Its magical, and they stare in wonder for more then a few minutes as the festive majesty of the likes they've never seen before before the deep discomfort of reality sinks back in.

Their body feels small and weak in a way that feels unnatural for some reason, they can't stop picking at their familiar blue and pink sweater but more then the unnatural strange buzzing in their head, is the fear that they don't know where they are....

Their mother doesn't know where they are......

They know they'll be in trouble, they just know it, but they can't let her down. Their hands twitch, and the move to scratch a blistering scab on the side of their face. Still feels wet. They shiver and scratch harder, setting off, bare feet padding onto cold stone.

The now eight year old Chara can be found nervously searching the castle with a desprete ferver or sitting quietly in wait in one of its many rooms.
