Sans knows better than to expect a normal skeleton beneath the black mass that he still thinks of as Gaster's clothes rather than his, for lack of a better word, flesh. What matters is that Gaster is eminently comfortable to hug, and more importantly that Gaster is here at all. Adam shouldn't have been able to do anything to the other monster, of course. But Adam also shouldn't have been able to do anything to Sans, either.
He does finally step back, not without some reluctance, and looks up at Gaster to force a smile. "hey! uh, sorry i haven't been around much the past couple of days. you know me and my naps. hope you weren't too bonely without me, bro."
