They stop a distance away, and hold out a hand, carefully avoiding direct eye contact but blinking slowly on the glances to see if she's still there. There's an etiquette to these things, they've found; let the cat come to you if they want. Picking one up and squeezing it resulted in a very sharp lesson about that, once.
