Croc's ploy works; the Batman, not a fan of getting crushed, abandons Croc in favor of letting go. It doesn't mean that he's given up; a baser animal would turn on him and rip him to shreds. Croc knows that somehow he always gets back up again.
A child won't. He continues on, legs kicking up thick sprays of mud behind him, trampling the shoe.
