[mingle] what's the dream and what's the reality?

Lately the castle's nights have been very clear and almost warm, even up so high among the clouds as they are. But regardless of the weather, they are generally peaceful nights, and few things seem to stir during them...apart from the castle's inhabitants, be it with late-night roving or with sleep. The dreams, by extension, are at least undisturbed...if maybe not always pleasant. That sort of thing tends to vary by the person, of course.

But now--and for several nights, consecutively--the castle residents may find their dreams starting to take on stranger shapes: memories they've never had, friends that don't usually arrive, strangers they've never seen. These odd impressions might cling and continue to confuse even upon waking, vivid as they were; was it really just a dream, or maybe something more...? Does that newcomer in your dream remember you there too, in the daytime?

Either way, there seems to be an strange energy in the air during these nights. And it's bringing dreams together.

Disorientation grabs hold of the Batman, the first thing he's aware of. He recognizes Chara but they're too big and they reek of stale blood and are grinning in a way he finds distressingly reminiscent of another adversary he's faced. They say- something about a friendship necklace, and it's pretty obviously intended as a threat. And then there's Frisk's voice and Batman turns and he sees them, but they're badly hurt, and he realizes that Sophie's also beside him.

"Do you even know what that means?" he snaps.

And then Batman doesn't even run- in fact he steps forward, moving to get between Chara and the other two children, although even with his advancing he has to struggle with the paralysis. (Very, very reminiscent.)

"Chara," he says, "Stand down."

Blood continues to gush from what's meant to be a mouth as Chara says with cheerfully false innocence, "What? Why? I'm doing her a favour."

"Don't you want to be friends, Sophie?" Frisk adds.

"No!" Sophie yells, so loudly her voice cracks. All of the bravery she shows in the waking world is gone.

She turns to run, but she can't, Chara is going to get her and they're going to get Batman, too!

And of course, things aren't as simple as he'd like. He refuses to even dignify that false innocence with a reaction.

The Batman does his best to ignore Frisk and Sophie-even when the latter shouts so loud it feels like it's piercing his skull- keeping his focus entirely on the child in front of him. He has to remember that fact: Chara's a child and he's a monster. If it comes down to it, it's no contest.

He abruptly unfurls his wings, rapidly creating a bigger barrier between Chara and everyone else.

"I won't let you hurt them anymore," he says. "Put down down the knife before I make you."

Normally she just tries and tries to get away, but...this is different. She twists around. Is Batman gonna stop them?

"Make me?" Chara asks. Something shifts--Sophie and Batman's viewpoint, or they shrink, or Chara grows. Regardless, they now tower over both of them. "I don't think you can."

Seeing Chara looming over him like that makes the Batman tense up, his jaw clenching together as he prepares for a fight. He's fought opponents bigger than himself, but admittedly, it's not a common situation for him... In fact, the situation as a whole feels wrong in a way he hasn't put his claw on, but he focuses on the most important thing: He has to protect Sophie and Frisk.

"Yes, I can."

The words are firm, and the Batman follows them by pouncing towards Chara, his claws and teeth bared.

Chara shrieks. It's the first time they sound like a normal child, and not an unstoppable force. They lash out with the knife, swinging wild.

Frisk hops up on a nearby window ledge and watches, their legs kicking against the stone. Their neck wound continues to bleed.

And Sophie...freezes. Batman is fighting. That means she should help him. But she can't.
