Look at me still talking when there's science to do (Open Post)

Sans is starting to get a handle on this place. Perhaps more to the point, and more potentially useful, is that he's started to get a handle on its inhabitants. There are a few that he keeps a personal eye on on a semi-regular basis, even if they don't always know it. The rest, he's just made note of their passage and their movements. It's all for professional purposes, of course.

And that means that, when he's finally ready to do so, Sans can make contact with every person currently in the castle, either in-person if he knows them by name or by leaving a note somewhere they'll see it if he doesn't yet. Whether by spoken or written word, the message is nevertheless always the same. It's a request to meet him in the ballroom with the cakes table at a certain time and place. From his observations, it seems to be one of the more stable rooms in the castle, so everyone should be able to find it.

On the stated day, at the stated time, everyone will...still have to wait five minutes for Sans to pull himself together after a nap, remember what he's supposed to be doing, and suddenly appear inside the room, still in the process of hastily smoothing out his notecards.

"so, uh, yeah," he says, looking from the assembled residents to the cards and back again. "should probably explain what you're all doing here. so. i'm sure you've all noticed that this castle has got some weird things going on, above and beyond the whole, uh...stealing us from across time and space thing. i'm also assuming that most of you want to go home and won't mind helping me figure out a way to get us there." He gestures at the table. "to do that, i'm gonna need to start testing some of these theories. guesswork is fun, but it doesn't get us anywhere. timing how long it takes this place to reset something seems like a good start. and so this particular experiment runs as cleanly as possible, uh...i'm gonna need your help eating everything on that table. like, all of it. just don't choke on any shiny bits."

Message delivered, Sans crams the notecards back in his pocket, and spreads his arms in silent indication for everyone to dig in.

Well, excuse him for having excellent taste. His partner's really got him into this style of sweet.

That said, why does he keep running into kids here? His job is focused on dealing with the sick and elderly. He doesn't even really like children. Why is the construct full of them?

...He really hopes they don't get close. He's too tired to deal with more kids. He needs to reset this.

...Aaand they're being ignored. Okay.

They consider ignoring him back. But that would be rude.

"Watch what you bite, there's bigger stuff to hurt your teeth on in the bigger cakes," they inform him seriously.

"Ugh, I don't have time for this..."

Watts is mumbling under his breath, a string of formulas and calculations that probably go way over Frisk's head. Finally, he looks up.

"Sorry, kid, but I'm not going to be here much longer anyways. Reset."

There's a sound like a computer beeping, the scenery distorts for a second... but otherwise, nothing happens.

Watts looks absolutely appalled.

"Shit."
dustless: (my determination)

takes liberties

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
The scenery and Frisk, or so it feels like it to them. They don't know how to describe the sensation beyond 'like static', but raking through their entire body head to toe. It's uncomfortable and unexpected enough to make them flinch.

"...Reset?" They're staring at him a lot harder. "You can reach your SAVE file?"
dr_awesome: (pic#6525462)

this totally works! let's see how long they go before realizing they're not quite the same

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-04 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, that at least did something to the child before him, but they seem to have noticed the sensation. If they had truly reset, they would be back to waving at him with their fork. Yet here they are, staring at him with their memories intact. And those memories apparently include knowledge of the construct?

Watts shouldn't continue this conversation. It's dangerous. He probably will risk distorting the memory further. But he's too curious to let this go.

"I should be able to. My menu's here. My notes, my status, and the saves... though I guess I haven't made any here yet, so they aren't really going to help me. How do you know about those?"
dustless: (visible silence)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-04 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"...'Cause I'm the only person who could make one." Well, and Flowey.

Notes? Status? Saves, plural, too, but they kind of had those when they reset, so they don't put too much thought into that yet.

"Haven't been able to reach mine. Not since I got here. What did you just do?"
dr_awesome: (pic#6525455)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-04 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Make one? You can't do that. I'm pretty sure Sigmund wouldn't have hired you, and a kid like you shouldn't be able to use the equipment. It's complicated stuff."

There's no way a kid would know how to save. Unless this is a glitch. But that can't be right. Why would a glitch take on the form of this child? What's going on here?

"I... I tried to reset. You aren't supposed to notice that. If it would have worked, it would have sent me back to the beginning of this scene. I was hoping it would get the construct back in order and put me where I'm supposed to be, instead of in this... weird castle."
dustless: (...?)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's no equipment. Can just do it. It has to do with determination." They're not sure how to explain that, but if he's talking about resetting, maybe that means he does.

Their eyes narrow further than usual. "Couldn't find any SAVE points, not really. And nobody--" they wave their hand at the table "--is where they're supposed to be. We just woke up here."

Unconsciously, they rub at their arms. Their skin is crawling. "Please don't try that anymore. It feels really, really...gross." A stab of guilt hits them in regards to Sans, even if they didn't exactly reset all that much. They hope it didn't feel like that for him.

"Uh... huh. Sorry kid, but where I'm from, we use actual equipment. We don't just play pretend. People's lives are on the line here. Determination isn't going to do shit."

He's getting frustrated, his voice raising in intensity and his hand gestures becoming more exaggerated.

"I don't know what waking up here means. Where even is here? It's not a memory, if I can't actually reset, and.."

He lets out a grunt, holding a hand up to his face and slipping his fingers under his glasses to rub at his eyes.

"And I'm sorry. I... didn't mean to make you feel weird. I just want to know what's going on. I really... really need to get back where I was."
dustless: (you grump to yourself)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-07 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Frisk does not look impressed by that accusation. Or his mouth, but that's less important. "Don't pretend when I'm talking about resetting. That's dangerous." Probably. It feels like it should be, anyway.

Nails dig into their own arm slightly. He's loud. And he's not a monster, which they can't decide is a good thing or not. Probably can't kill them too fast, anyway.

At least he apologizes. Frisk does answer, even if they sound a little clipped.

"Nobody's sure. We all woke up here. Months ago, weeks ago. Now." They nod to indicate him. "And. If there are people dying back home...they might show up here okay. Happened for some. This place is weird 'bout time. Still don't know how to go back yet, though."

dr_awesome: (pic#6525472)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-08 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is dangerous, but you shouldn't know about that. You should never have been granted access to the memory constructs. You're just a kid..."

How could they know about any of this? Talking with them is just getting Neil more and more paranoid, and their apparent explanation of this place isn't helping at all.

"So... you're saying that this place has been here for months. That would be a normal assumption for you to make if you were just a program, but considering your knowledge on resets, that can't be right. And even if you did have your own memory construction device, I wouldn't be able to just hop into yours with my modified one. So... that doesn't answer the question of where I am, does it?"

But Frisk says something that snaps him out of his musing, and for a minute, he looks... worried.

"Okay, but say someone who is dying already showed up here, at a point where what they were dying from was still a threat. Are they going to be able to live any longer than they would back home? Or am I still running out of time?"
dustless: (quiet surprise)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-08 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
For most of that, Frisk looks completely blank.

"...I don't have equipment. There's nothing like that here. There's not even TV." They're pretty sure he's talking about technology and not magic. "And I am real. Last time I checked." Just the slightest bit of dry lacing their words.

At least until his final words. Then they switch gears from seeming very mildly annoyed to genuine concern. "Don't know? Nobody like that's been here yet. Or died. What's wrong?" They visibly look him up and down, as if trying to spot a grievous wound they somehow missed before.
dr_awesome: (pic#6525461)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-09 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Then... then I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but it can't be the same as what I'm talking about. You would have to have some idea of the device otherwise. And if you're real, you're not a glitch. I... I honestly don't know what to make of this."

He looks... really scared. Probably on the verge of a breakdown. But one glance at Frisk makes him straighten, try to laugh.

"Nothing's wrong, kid. Just talking theories. I'm a scientist, so that's kind of what I do."

There don't seem to be any noticeable injuries on him. He looks remarkably normal, or as normal as a guy in a white labcoat can.

"Anyways, if I have this right, I'm not actually dreaming any of this, and I actually am in some magical world away from my own. So I should at least introduce myself to my interdimensional prisonmates. The name's Dr. Neil Watts, technology specialist with Sigmund Agency of Life Generation. Sorry for getting morbid on you. Death is just part of the job where I'm from."
dustless: (visible silence)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-09 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
There is blatant disbelief written across Frisk's face.

They don't press. Mostly because they aren't sure how. They do pat his arm for lack of a better thing to do.

"...'S okay. Do you--does that...agency make clones?" That's what Life Generation makes them think of. It sounds very science fiction. S-4 and Sans-Serif have gotten them thinking about that kind of thing a lot more lately.

"I'm Frisk," they add.
dr_awesome: (pic#6525454)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Neil smiles, but still gently moves away from Frisk, holding his arm so they can't touch him anymore. No hard feelings, he's just not a very touchy-feely person.

"What? Heh, no, no. It's hard to explain, but we go into memories. Specifically, the memories of those people that have something in their life they never got a chance to accomplish. We change the memories around and upload a new version of their memories, where they accomplished their last wish so they... you know. Have a happy ending. I guess our name doesn't really suggest that's what we do. That's the first time someone guessed clones, though."

This kid's weird.

"Nice to meet you, Frisk."
dustless: (quiet surprise)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"...wow. That sounds...kind of cool, but...really weird." Something about it seems wrong to Frisk, but they're not sure how to articulate it even to themselves..

Toriel would agree, though she'd sound much fonder of her strange human child.

"Kay. Dr. Watts. 'F that's what you like being called?"
dr_awesome: (pic#6525455)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-17 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, well, I'm not exactly used to explaining it to kids. It's a pretty good thing, though not everyone sees its good side very easily."

He lives a life of being accosted by protesters, but at least it gives him ingredients for his homemade ketchup.

"Dr. Watts is usually what I go by, yes. I mean, unless you'd really like Lorenzo von Matterhorn."
dustless: (...?)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-17 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"But--kids--?" Kids die too, they almost say, but...that's not really a subject for a party, probably, or for anyone new here. They visibly jerk their head, as if rattling the thought out of their mind.

"Matterhorn. Isn't that a place?" It sounds familiar.
dr_awesome: (pic#6525455)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-19 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Yeah, but we don't usually deal with those cases. There aren't enough memories to adjust with that, not enough time to grant the wishes they have in mind. It's just too difficult right now."

Which is good. Watts isn't any good with kids... just due to the nature of his job. He barely can handle speaking with the elderly. If he had to console children in their last moments...

"Yeah. They probably named it after the guy or something. Who really knows?"
dustless: (Default)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-19 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"...yeah. Being a superhero or monarch or having a unicorn, or something." That's what other kids usually like, don't they?

Frisk shrugs. "Why'd you pick that name?"
dr_awesome: (pic#6525455)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-02-22 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, usually. I mean, maybe some day we'll figure out how to adjust our equipment to handle that, but right now, we'd just glitch everything out."

Watts hopes if they do develop the right software for the job, he isn't put in charge of any children's cases. That'd be too much.

"Eh, it's... a stupid joke. An alias I went by sometimes for fun. My partner would always shut that down, though."
dustless: (...?)

[personal profile] dustless 2016-02-23 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Frisk wonders what it's like, to mess around with peoples' memories. They suppose they did that before, when they reset, but even then some memories of them were still there. Somehow.

"Alias?" There's a word they don't quite know. Nickname? "Why'd they bother doing that? Would you get in trouble?"
dr_awesome: (Default)

[personal profile] dr_awesome 2016-03-17 03:14 am (UTC)(link)

And of course, Frisk never caused the death of someone by messing around with their memories. Not that it's that morbid... it's just the way the system works.

"Nah, nothing like that. She just doesn't appreciate my unique sense of humour. Her loss."
