alas, it's not omelettes
His stay in this castle has gotten a lot longer than expected.
Which is a bit worrying for a variety of different reasons. But then there's the more practical concerns of being trapped in a magical castle, too--like the fact that most of the food to be found so far consists of either fruits from the garden or cakes from the ballroom, mostly. (Cakes with strange not-edible things inside them...) And that's just...not enough, honestly. A growing boy is a perpetually hungry one, and there's a lot to be said for the lack of actual meals lately.
But today Lucas finally stumbles into a kitchen in his wanderings. It's disappointingly ghost-free, much the way the rest of the castle has been--he wonders what Duster would think of all this--but still, the room is large, and there are pots and utensils hung across the walls, and vegetables in the cabinets. ...Perfectly fresh vegetables. Which is pretty odd, but...everything else about this place is odd already. Lucas sets them out on the counter anyway.
Because he does know how to cook, a bit. Flint would often be away for multiple days at a time, and so Lucas is mostly self-taught, using advice from fellow villagers and experimenting a bit on his own...after three years, putting together a decent vegetable stew isn't too hard at all. There's a wood stove that's easy enough to light a fire in, and there's water here and a large pot there...
And so visitors might be drawn in by a faint but pleasant smell, wafting through the open kitchen doorway. Lucas is found standing at a counter (on top of a tall stool, so that he can actually reach everything), carefully chopping more assorted vegetables with a knife while a large pot simmers gently on the stove nearby. He's humming to himself very softly, but is otherwise absorbed in deep concentration as he tries to get these vegetable chunks just the right size, and doesn't notice anyone coming in or watching just yet.

Awesome. Here's your ghost in the kitchen, then, Lucas! And no worries--he's had this happen before.
That's fine, of course. He has no doubts this boy will be another fan of his before they know it.
He spreads his hands, showing that they're empty, as he says, "I can't say I'm surprised. I've only just arrived, myself, and this castle is much too large for the number of people living in it.
"Anyway. I'm Mettaton: pop idol and movie star extraordinaire!" He resists the urge to strike a pose; sudden movements would no doubt scare the poor child, and that would certainly count. "What's your name, darling?"
AT LAST HIS GHOST HUNT IS OVER and yeah robots are a Thing in his canon so. kneejerk reaction oops
Lucas relaxes marginally but visibly, at the words. Hesitates, and then draws forward just enough to set his squash platter safely onto the counter--though he still keeps said counter between the both of them. Mostly just to be on the safe side, but also...because he now has quite a few questions, if the way his expression closes with some faint confusion is anything to go by.
"...I'm Lucas." He pauses, rubbing one of his arms and eyeing Mettaton uncertainly. "What's...a 'pop idol'? --You're not one of Porky's robots, are you?"
It's cool. Mettaton will...okay, probably weird him out more than anything, but yeah.
"I don't know who this 'Porky' is, beautiful, but I can assure you I'm no one's robot but my own. As for what a pop idol is...." He gives the boy a big smile. "I'm the monster everyone wants to know. I'm a singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer, TV and movie star.... I even have my own cooking show: 'Cooking With a Killer Robot' --though of course by that I mean 'killer good looks.'" He winks.

Looking very faintly overwhelmed but not entirely put off (though maybe just a bit abashed--'beautiful'.......?), Lucas slowly begins making his way around the counter now, staring at Mettaton with increasing curiosity. "That's--a lot of things at once. A pop idol sounds...very time consuming." What's a choreographer, for that matter? Maybe he ought not ask. But the mention of cooking earns a small tilt of his head. "Oh...but is that why you came here? To cook?"
no subject
"That's right, darling. I may not need to eat myself, but I can still see that Frisk's diet is considerably lacking. I thought I'd whip up something a little more wholesome. They are a growing child, after all." His smile deepens. "Of course, I wouldn't be averse to sharing, if you're interested."

Because a robot that hasn't tried to attack, doesn't know Porky, is a 'pop idol', and actually knows Frisk well enough to be cooking things for them...well, it's probably not such a bad robot after all. But it's always so hard to tell at first. (Better safe than sorry...) But now--
"Oh, you're one of Frisk's friends? ...Yeah, guess they're growing too. Not a lot of different kinds of food here." Lucas stops his circuit around the counter, which isn't between them any longer. He considers Mettaton with open curiosity now, but pauses and gestures vaguely to his pot on the stove too. "I'm not sure...how a robot cooks, but if I get in the way just let me know. Soup's almost done here. And...if you'd like to share, I suppose I wouldn't mind trying some. If that's alright. What are you going to make?"

"As for what I'm going to cook...." He taps a white-gloved finger against his chin. "I had been planning on making a vegetable dish--a casserole, perhaps--but if you've made enough of that soup to share.... I believe some whole wheat bread would go nicely."
Bread unfortunately takes hours to make, though at least he hardly needs to keep an eye on it the entire time. Still, soup is easy enough to reheat, even in such deprived circumstances as these.

He moves to the stove and picks up a ladle, intent on stirring the soup a bit. But he still listens with interest as Mettaton lays out his plans. "Oh--yes, I wouldn't mind sharing the soup too. Might have made a bit too much for just me, anyway...and bread goes really well with soups. That's a good idea." He does know how to make bread too, he supposes. Mostly nut bread, but regular bread probably isn't that far off... "If you need help I wouldn't mind. I've gotten almost all the vegetables ready for this already, so it's mostly just waiting now..."

He hadn't been sure how Lucas was going to take to him after an introduction like the one they'd had, but now? This is going to be fun.
