They didn't see anything of themself or Frisk when they dug. Which means things were being hidden. It's a red hot thought, because what did they miss.

The irony that they're feeling like this because they didn't have all the information and yet are angry at Gaster knowing things about them he shouldn't fails to occur to them. Mostly because they feel it is justified given the imbalance occuring then. The past tense is more of a comfort than they would like.

Something of what Gaster says resonates with Frisk, but they stay silent. They press the memories of their meeting with the younger Gaster into Chara's mind (skipping over some things and emphasising others) and withdraw to let them draw their own conclusions.

Chara, wracked with a festering uncertainty under the smile, digs. They smell weakness easily, and the focus on the wristwatch at their statement-question carries the scent.

"How did you come to be such a way, Doctor?"
