When I grow up, I want to be...

When Minako sees the door, it's a done deal. The smiling jack-o-lantern on the door is irresistible to the child. Her grabby little hands are on the knob the minute she sees the door, expecting candy, or costumes, or something. What she finds is rows and rows of jewelry. Disappointing for the hungry tomboy. She frowns around, curious, leaning up high on the balls of her feet to see.

Nothing edible, and no toys. No fun at all.

But as she's turning to leave, something catches the light and holds her gaze. A simple chain bracelet, hanging on a base. It's sandwiched between a few others, and she has to push them off first before she can get to it, but it's drawing her in in a way she can't explain. She rolls it around in her fingers, the braided chain pattern small but strong, and it has only one ornament on it: a cute little silver skull-like mask. Not usually her kind of thing, but it's so unobtrusive, maybe it wouldn't be annoying to wear it... so she fumbles with the clasp, needing to brace her wrist on a table to get it hooked again around her wrist.

The minute the hook is closed she starts to feel different. A sort of itching ache covers her whole body, like the ones she would get in her knees sometimes that adults told her were growing pains. But her whole body is growing pains. And her whole body is stretching. She feels herself start to glow, surrounded by some kind of magic. It's peaceful, though, definitely not something scary. Not that little Minako ever thought magic was scary.

She didn't even think magic was scary when she found out it was real, and that she had to hold a gun to her head to use it... but when did she learn that? How?

The iching and the glowing stop, replaced with dizzy spinning thoughts, like too much poured into her mind at once. She remembers her parent's death, the battle between Death and the robot. The robot she later learned was Aigis, who was her friend. She remembers growing up, and when her journey truly began as she returned to Iwatodai. And the year that followed.

She remembers her death.

Minako looks down at her hands, now much older and properly proportioned. The long fingers, calloused from holding the shaft of her weapon. She's wearing her Gekkoukan uniform, now. A serene sort of smile crosses her face, and she rests a hand on her chest, brushing her fingers against the bow at her collar. Gekkoukan. Home.

It must have been the bracelet that did this. Aged her up and gave her all the requisite memories and changes. She looks at it again, touching the little mask there. Appropriate. Maybe there was the spark of memory in her before she put it on, and that was why she chose it. Either way, she's not in a hurry to take it back off. She wants to explore this castle as her adult, aware self. She wants to have the freedom of life, again, in this more mature body. She wants to see Ryoji, since she remembers that he's here.

So she's off to explore, looking very unlike the Minako most of the castle residents know.

Chara clasps their hands behind their back, almost adopting the pose of a straight-backed schoolchild answering something rotely taught before remembering they need those and withdrawing them.

[Demons are malevolent entities that exist purely to cause harm to those around them, oft considered to be fallen angels. Red eyes are popular in depiction. They are irredeemably evil creatures.] They smile, and it's false and unfriendly, eyes wide and bright. [Like myself!]

*Unlike you!

No.

Interesting. That pose is pretty clearly... sass. Minako finds herself smirking a little at it. It's sort of a response to her usual straighbacked good-girl pose. Not that Chara would necessarily know that.

Hmm, if you say so, kiddo. Minako is unconvinced about that last part. "Well, that description doesn't really fit me, so no. I suppose I am not."

She doesn't bother to question why she seems to know the meaning of the child's sign language. The castle is magic enough to age her up, it's magic enough to translate.

Even the false smile doesn't really faze her. "Sorry to disappoint you."
itstheend: about your brother (less than impressed)

[I am not disappointed.]

Mostly because they don't believe her.

[Tell me, do you habitually disturb sleeping strangers?]

They're just a little peeved at how off-guard they were caught. It's difficult to find a place in the sun, that isn't, by definition, exposed, but they thought they'd made a reasonable attempt this time.

"All right, you're not." She doesn't believe you, either.

Then she clasps her own hands apologetically in front of her. "When they look like they're about to get sun poisoning, yes, I do. I was concerned. But you seem to be just fine, so I must have been wrong in my observations. My apologies."

[Sun poisoning.]

The look is flat but... is that a thing? Sunburn, yes, but can that really be considered poisoning, per se. Chara knows that you're supposed to go in sunlight for the skin to make something important - can it make too much of it? Have they been slowly killing themself and not knowing?

This is more of an idle thought rather than anything else. The way she speaks... reminds them of someone. The evidence of demonhood is sadly mounting up for them.

[Your concern is noted, if not appreciated.]

Really, though, is sun poisoning a thing.

"Yes, sun poisoning. It's basically what they call it when you get a third degree sunburn. You're peeling badly and you were shaking, so..."

Maybe that's too invasive? She didn't mean to be nosy, she really was just concerned. But this kid is clearly the spikey around the edges type. More so than Minako is used to in her hard-to-get friends.

"My apologies." She's very close to making to leave Chara alone, but some little stubborn part of her that managed to make all of her social links at home work tells her to wait and see.
itstheend: this is happening (oh)

this kid is such a cactus I'm sorry

Chara's hands go to their face, the only two surfaces where skin is visible, thanks to the sweater (yes they are sweltering and dehydrated to boot. This kid...). It stings a great deal, but they have a high pain tolerance. Their fingers meet rough surface, and they hook and peel away a kind of terrifyingly impressive large patch.

They look at it between thumb and forefinger. That sure is a thing - they've peeled before, their skin is not very resistant to the sun, but not that badly. They can feel their legs might have burned through the cloth, too. They let it fall onto the grass and look back up at her. The apology drips off like water.

"Is it lethal?"

It gets asked like someone might ask another's opinion on this cloud shape - mainly idle interest and very little worry. But then again... that's right, they have a passenger. They can trade pain back and forth, but really death.

"It is called poisoning, so that implies treatment is an antidote."

There's an implicit question there, in the slightest lift of eyebrows - but they don't trust her enough to ask outright.

If Minako had water to offer this kid would be getting so much of it. She kind of wants to dip them in a cool spring either way, with how burnt they are and how hot she imagines they must be. What the heck even. What were they thinking?

Her concern spikes higher at the sight of the peeling. It's so bad!

"Not usually." She isn't actually bothered by the nonchalance of the question. A casual acceptance of the inevitability of death is normal, to her. "It's not good for you though. You can get fever, throw up, skin damage, all that stuff."

She shakes her head a little. "Not in a traditional sense. You just need to rehydrate, stay out of the sun, and keep your skin cool. Not like, iced, but away from heat."

They're asking about how to treat it, that's progress!
itstheend: ya really (oh really)

hhh pretend they signed that up there gg me (also cw suicide ideation)

Chara has been dipping in and out of the fountain, on hot days like this where it can get too much. They've even slept in it sometimes, jerking away with a splash of water. They practically live there. Unfortunately, sunlight reflecting off water only makes sunburn worse.

(But they do file it away as a source of both water and coolness, for later use.)

Chara tilts their head, their hair shifting with the motion. Fever and throwing up. Well that explains a few things. And not usually. The amount they've been in the sun lately, if that didn't kill them they can't exactly increase the hours.

[I see. Unfortunately, I prefer to sleep in light, and there are precious little other sources.]

It's a gamble, admitting this, even if they aren't disclosing why. The torches in the castle flicker too much to truly banish shadow, especially deep in the castle away from windows.
