And yes it is mainly for the potential punnery. The book said that they're to be planted in spring, which is... apparently what it's become, and Chara has little reason to doubt the book so far. They're planning to test things out with this one plant first and then add others, not entirely confident of their ability to keep even something as theoretically simple as a plant alive.
